How RCREEE came into being
RCREEE was set up on basis of the Cairo declaration which was signed by the member states on June 25, 2008. RCREEE grew out of the conviction that the promotion of renewable energies and energy efficiency requires a co-ordinated effort in the region. The promotion of renewable energies and energy efficiency is high on the political agenda in all member states. However, the member states felt the need for a platform to exchange ideas and experiences (lessons learned) and to co-ordinate policies on the regional level.
RCREEE has thirteen founding members, including Jordan, Bahrain, Tunisia, Algeria, Sudan, Syria, Iraq, Palestine, Lebanon, Libya, Egypt, Morocco and Yemen., During the start up phase, RCREEE is sponsored by Egypt, also serving as host country for the Centre, as well as Germany, the EU and Denmark... (the development partners).
The development partners have pledged to provide financial and technical assistance to RCREEE with an aggregate value of EUR 15 million during the initial five years (2008 to 2012). The financial support shall help RCREEE to build a sustainable operation. ”Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Internationale Zusammenarbeit” (GIZ) supports the set-up of RCREEE through the secondment of a long-term expert. In the future, RCREEE shall be funded through contributions from the member states and income generated from research and consultancy work.
