RCREEE catalyses the use of solar photovoltaic energy in Iraq
The Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE) in cooperation with the Ministry of Electricity in Iraq and United Nations Development Program (UNDP) had organized a mission to provide technical and capacity building support to the Republic of Iraq from 30th September to 6th October 2017. This support is in the framework of “Catalyzing the Use of Solar Photovoltaic Energy” project implemented in partnership with UNDP.
During the mission, RCREEE delegation met with the Advisor to Iraq’s Prime Minister for Energy, Mr. Raad Mohsin Alhares, and representatives from the Ministry of Electricity, Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of Health and Environment. In addition, the delegation also met with UNDP, and a number of private sector representatives.
The Capacity Building Workshop on “Policy Options and Incentives for Renewable Energy Development in Iraq” was held on October 2nd, 2017. The workshop was attended by representatives from Ministries of Electricity, Health and Environment, Industries and Science and Technology, as well as private sector representatives. Participants explored policy, legal and regulatory framework best practices from the region and internationally.
“The Government of Iraq deeply appreciates the support and technical inputs of UNDP and RCREEE. Together, we look forward to harness the potential of solar photovoltaic energy in meeting the electricity demand of Iraq whilst keeping our commitment to the cause of climate change" stated Mr. Raad Mohsin Alhares, Advisor to Iraq’s Prime Minister for Energy, during the workshop.
RCREEE and UNDP are in cooperation to support the targeted policy initiatives including the development of incentive mechanisms and grid code for electricity in the coming months. The proposed policy inputs and support are expected to create an enabling environment for the promotion of and increased investment in renewable energy, helping Iraq to meet its energy commitments.
About Iraq's cooperation with RCREEE:
Iraq is one of RCREEE’s founding member states. In 2015, Iraq assumed Iraq assumed the presidency of RCREEE Board of Trustees. The cooperation over the past years included technical support and capacity building activities. In addition, Iraq was included in a number of RCREEE publications such as “the Arab Future Energy Index” with UNDP and “the Pan-Arab Renewable Energy Strategy 2030: Roadmap of Actions for Implementation” in cooperation with International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the League of Arab States.
