Cairo: Dr. Hassan Younes, Minister of Electricity and Energy has launched last Friday the largest project for building a wind farm for electricity generation in Egypt, located in Gabal El Zeit, thus marking the start of the project's implementation. The planned capacity of the farm is to reach 200 megawatt with a total value of two billion and eight hundred EGP.
Dr. Hassan Younes stated that a contract for consultation services has been signed for the project's implementation with a value of 30 million EGP and a duration period of 78 months. Dr. Younes added that building this station is among the projects of the five-year plan 2007-2012.
The plan of the electricity sector aims at having 20% of the electricity generation produced from renewable energy by the year 2020. 12% are to be produced from wind energy, thus adding 7200 megawatt to the network.
The minister stated further, that the supply and installation of the project's turbines will be subject to a tender during the first quarter of the year 2010. A contract for supply and installation of the turbines will be signed in the last quarter of the same year, whereby the station is to be operated in August 2012.
The minister explained that the energy produced in the frame of this project will reach about 790 gigawatt annually. It is expected to lead to saving the use of an equal volume of about 180 thousand tons of oil annually and to contribute to reducing the carbon emissions by about 430 thousand tons.
The minister reiterated that the project aims at using Egypt's natural abundance of wind energy through a mature and environmental friendly technology. In addition, Egypt will thus become a pioneer in the field of marketing technology-based production of wind energy. H.E. pointed out that the total capacities of electricity generation from wind energy have up till present reached about 430 megawatt. Currently, further 120 megawatt are in the pipeline, while the procedures of funding a production of 720 megawatt are being finalized. This is in addition to the new capacities subject of the Gabal El Zeit project implementation contract which are to reach 200 megawatt, representing 47% of the currently prevalent total capacities.
