Dr. Hassan Younis, Minsiter of Electricity and Energy is to inaugurate today in Sharm El Sheikh the proceedings of the preparatory founding conference of the International Renewable Energy Agency. Within the frame of the conference proceedings, the country that is to host the Agency's headquarters is to be chosen and the elections of the Agency's general manager is to run. This is to mark the beginning of the Agency's work that is to be taken up within one month following the issue of the Agency's statutes. Dr. Younis announced before the delegates of 115 countries attending the conference, that the Agency's headquarters will be decided upon, stating that three countries have applied: the Arab Emirates, Austria and Germany. To this, the Agency's general manager will be elected from among four candidates from France, Spain, Denmark and Greece. He further added that the Agency's activities will include providing support to all that pertains to applications of renewable energies and assisting the countries in benefitting from the effective development and transfer of experiences, technologies and knowledge since the Agency is a Center of Excellence in the field of renewable energies technology. He reiterated that the Agency will analyze, monitor and organize the current practices in the field of renewable energies in order to identify the elements of success and failure in developing the exploitation of those energies without imposing any tasks on the policies of the member countries, while providing political advice and assistance in this field, and furthermore improving knowledge and supporting the capacity development and the necessary competencies among those countries which is represented in offering training programs in this field.
Egypt supports the Emirates in hosting the headquarters
Ambassador Hazem Khairat, delegate of Egypt at the Arab League, announced Egypt's support to the UAE country (United Arab Emirates) to host the headquarters of the new Agency "IRENA". The ambassador of the Emirate stated that Egypt is a friend and sister country that has always been positive in its attitudes. He pointed out that Egypt and the Arab countries have already reached consensus in the Doha Arab Summit to support the wish of the Emirates in hosting the headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency in the city of Masdar in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
